Manual payment methods support multi-currency checkouts
Shopify has started rolling out a long-awaited update that improves the checkout experience for stores using manual payment methods, such as Cash on Delivery (COD), wires, or bank transfers. With this update, customers can now complete their orders using these payment methods in their local currency, as configured through Shopify Markets.
Why is this a big improvement?
Previously, while merchants could offer manual payment methods, there was a major limitation: even if a customer was browsing the store in their local currency, the final checkout amount would display in the store’s default currency, accompanied by a confusing note explaining that the order would be processed in a different currency.
This user experience was very confusing, especially for international customers. It was particularly problematic in Europe, where manual payment methods are widely used. As a result, many merchants chose not to offer these options to customers outside their primary currency region, missing potential conversions.
Here’s an example of how it looked for customers before this update:
What’s changed?
Now, when customers choose a manual payment method at checkout, they’ll see the final amount in their local currency, without any mention of a currency conversion. This creates a much clearer checkout experience, aligned with the rest of the multi-currency shopping journey.

Important notes
- This update applies only to manual payment methods (e.g. COD, bank transfers,…).
- It does not apply to additional payment methods like Klarna or else, if those are set up as additional payment methods.
- The feature is being rolled out gradually — if you don’t see it working on your store yet, you can contact Shopify Support or reach out to us for assistance.
