Customer eligibility for automatic discounts

Previously, it wasn’t possible to limit automatic discounts to specific customers or customer segments in Shopify. If you wanted to target a special offer to your VIPs or reward certain customers, you had to rely on a third-party app—or find another workaround.

With Shopify’s latest update, that’s changed. You can now choose exactly who gets your automatic discounts — no extra apps, no workarounds. This means you can run more focused and personalized promotions, whether that’s a thank-you for loyal customers or a nudge for those who haven’t purchased yet.

How to set up customer eligibility for automatic discounts

When creating an automatic discount, scroll down to the Eligibility section. You’ll find three options:

  • All customers: The default setting. Everyone gets the discount.
  • Customer segments: Select up to 5 segments, either ones you’ve created yourself or default segments Shopify provides (e.g. Customers who haven’t purchased yet). Ideal for VIP groups, newsletter subscribers, or customers with abandoned checkouts.
  • Specific customers: Pick individual customers who will have access to the discount. Perfect for exclusive, invite-only offers.

This small but powerful update gives you more control over your promotions — and helps ensure the right offers reach the right people. Happy selling!
